Your Questions, Answered
Everything you need to know about Freemasonry and joining our Lodge in Squamish, British Columbia.
What is Freemasonry?
Freemasonry is a fraternal organization that traces its origins to the local fraternities of stonemasons. It is a system of morality, veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols, that teaches its members to be better men and better citizens. It is one of the world's oldest and largest non-religious, non-political, fraternal and charitable organizations.
Who can join Freemasonry?
Membership, in North America, is restricted to men over the age of 21 who are prepared to profess a belief in God. The expression in some rituals is "freeborn, of mature age and under the tongue of good report." You must be of good moral character and come of your own free will and accord.
How do I join?
The first step is to express your desire to join. You can contact our Lodge directly or reach out to a Freemason you know. We meet on the 2nd Friday of every month at 7:30pm at 38140 Cleveland Avenue, Squamish, BC. If you are located elsewhere in BC, you may contact the Grand Lodge of British Columbia and Yukon.
What happens at a Masonic meeting?
Meetings include ritual work, fraternal fellowship, and lodge business. We also organize social events, charitable activities, and educational programs. The ritual work involves the conferral of degrees and the teaching of moral lessons through allegory and symbolism.
Is Freemasonry a religion?
No. Freemasonry is not a religion, nor is it a substitute for religion. It requires a belief in a Supreme Being but does not dictate which religion a member should follow. Men of all faiths are welcome. Freemasonry does not have a theology or dogma, and it does not offer sacraments.
What are the costs involved?
There are initiation fees and annual dues associated with membership. These fees help cover the costs of running the Lodge and supporting charitable activities. Please contact the Lodge secretary for current fee information specific to Mount Garibaldi Lodge No. 127.
Where do you meet?
We meet at 38140 Cleveland Avenue, Squamish, BC V8B 0C4, on the 2nd Friday of every month at 7:30pm. We are dark (do not meet) in July and August.
What are the three degrees of Freemasonry?
Freemasonry confers three degrees: Entered Apprentice (the first degree), Fellow Craft (the second degree), and Master Mason (the third degree). Each degree teaches moral lessons through allegory and symbolism, building upon the lessons of the previous degree.
Is Freemasonry a secret society?
Freemasonry is not a secret society — it is a society with secrets. Our existence, membership, and meeting places are publicly known. What is kept private are certain modes of recognition and portions of our ritual. Freemasons are proud of their membership and openly wear Masonic emblems.
